The Questions

Love is as many different things as there are people in the world: the touch of a caring friend, the hand of a little child, the warm and grateful tongue of a pet and the gentle kiss of the person who has become such a part of you that the two of you are as one. It is this last kind of love that we celebrate in February, and it is precisely this kind of love in its purest form which is honored in these poems. Simple, basic, grounded, genuine, eternal love; the inspiration for countless books of fiction, cherished passages from plays to be read out loud, lush images on canvas, dazzling gifts of jewelry, dinner at fine restaurants and romantic picnics in the mountains by the side of the road.

Do you remember?

Do you remember

that time we sat

at the edge

of the lake

and watched

the sun set

and the moon rise

and the whole world

moved

at a much slower pace?

Do you see it?

Do you see it

too, the quiet

settling in

all around us

as we move by the sunset

falling down

among the trees,

in the quiet car,

classical guitar

coming from the speakers?

Why Is It?

Why is it

that when you hold my hand

and rub it gently,

squeeze it

like we will

never touch

again,

why

do I still feel

the warmth

and the rough spots

of your fingers,

even after

you let go?
